Introduction

The genome of our closest cousin has been sequenced, unravelling the biochemical secrets of our biological heritage. But it's not just the field of genomics where astonishing advances have been made in the last decade. Around the world, primatologists have been busy exploring the lives of these incredible animals. How do they learn? Can they imitate behaviour? Are they cooperative, intelligent, deceitful?

To reveal how scientists answer these questions, Nature presents a series of film clips of chimpanzees in the wild and from world-renowned primate sanctuaries, including some previously-unseen footage to accompany articles appearing in the chimp genome edition of Nature.
