3: Puzzle box
Do chimpanzees learn by imitating behaviours they see? The following experiment was designed to test this hypothesis using a box containing a food treat. The box has a door on the top, and a door on the front where the treat can be found. The door on top of the box is irrelevant: only the front door needs to be opened to get at the food. This film shows the experiment with a black box, and then shows the same experiment with a clear box.
