Cassini special Photo diary 9

22 July: NASA released this natural colour image of the planet's rings, which Cassini took nine days before entering Saturn's orbit. The rings are largely made of water ice, which appears white in this image. However, contamination by mineral dust and carbon compounds darkens the rings to a murky brown in places. Further analysis of this colour variation could help scientists to understand the exact composition of Saturn's shimmering halo.
