Physicists snatch a peep into quantum paradox

Measurement-induced collapse of quantum wavefunction captured in slow motion.

It is the most fundamental, and yet also the strangest postulate of the theory of quantum mechanics: the idea that a quantum system will catastrophically collapse from a blend of several possible quantum states to just one the moment it is measured by an experimentalist.

In textbooks on quantum mechanics, the collapse is depicted as sudden and irreversible. It is also extremely counterintuitive. Researchers have struggled to understand how a measurement can profoundly alter the state that an object is in, rather than just allowing us to learn about an objective reality.

A new experiment1sheds some light on this question through the use of weak measurements — indirect probes of quantum systems that tweak a wavefunction slightly while providing partial information about its state, avoiding a sudden collapse.

Atomic and solid-state physicist Kater Murch of the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues performed a series of weak measurements on a superconducting circuit that was in a superposition — a combination of two quantum states. They did this by monitoring microwaves that had passed through a box containing the circuit, based on the fact that the circuit's electrical oscillations alter the state of the microwaves as they pass through the box. Over a couple of microseconds, those weak measurements captured snapshots of the state of the circuit as it gradually changed from a superposition to just one of the states within that superposition — as if charting the collapse of a quantum wavefunction in slow motion.

Although equivalent experiments have been done on the quantum states of photons of light, this is the first time such work has been done in a typically noisier solid-state system. “It demonstrates how much progress we’ve made in the solid state in the past 10 years,” says Murch. “Finally, systems are so pure that we can rival experiments in photons.”

The team also found that decoherence, the process by which noise in the environment causes quantum states to decay, can be minimized by repeated weak measurements. Murch says that the microwaves used to probe the superconducting circuit can be thought of as its environment because they are the predominant thing interacting with it. By monitoring the environment, the fluctuations in the microwaves become a known quantity rather than a source of unknown noise.

That enables the quantum state to remain pure, as Murch and his demonstrated — a finding that has a practical consequence. Quantum bits used for computation can be encoded in the state of a superconducting circuit, as they were in the present experiment, but they can also be made from the quantum state of a trapped ion or of an impurity in a crystal. Being able to sustain the coherence of a quantum bit in a solid-state system by making weak measurements ought to be possible in other experimental hardware too. “It’s a very general idea,” says quantum theorist Andrew Jordan at the University of Rochester, New York.

Theorist Alexander Korotkov of the University of California, Riverside, adds that the measurements can be thought of as a kind of 'quantum steering' that helps to keep the system evolving along a quantum path, casting light on the intrinsically gradual nature of any measurement process. "In real life nothing happens instantaneously,” he says.

I'm not sure why this is described as wavefunction collapse. It could equally well (or better, in my opinion) be described as slow-motion differentiation of a system into multiple branches, under the Everett interpretation. That would avoid all the problems of wfn collapse (instantaneous action at a distance, uncaused probabalistic behaviour, ad hoc additions to quantum theory, giving consciousness a role in the behaviour of experimental systems...!)

First of all, Timothy Eichfeld is 100% correct, and he puts it very well, when he says that “measurements” do not cause field collapse. When Schrodinger introduced his now-famous cat experiment, he did it to show the ludicrousness of thinking that mere looking could cause a cat to live or die. Ironically it is now cited as an example of the very thing he was ridiculing. (Einstein expressed the same thought when he said “Does the moon exist only when we look at it?”) Field collapse occurs at the atomic level, long before anyone looks. Second, I don’t think field collapse is “counterintuitive”. It may not be what we expected, but physics grew by changing our opinions when evidence demands it. When evidence showed that the earth is round, we said, well that’s not what we expected but we can accept it. As I say in my book (“Fields of Color: The theory that escaped Einstein”), "There is nothing inconsistent or paradoxical about field collapse. It just isn't what we expected." Third, and most importantly, the article doesn't mention Quantum Field Theory; everything is described in terms of Quantum Mechanics. This is the great tragedy of today - that QFT, the greatest theory every developed, is either forgotten or misunderstood (which is why I wrote my book). In QFT the world is made of fields, not particles, and the paradoxes of QM and Relativity disappear. Further, these fields are quantized and, since quanta must live and die as a unit, field collapse is inevitable and natural. Readers who want to learn more about QFT, without the encumbrance of mathematics, should visit quantum-field-theory.net.

It is not so much as 'measurement' as it is the disruption of the very fragile energy states holding the system in place. The 'wavefunction' does not know if a human or a frog or stray muon has interfered with its energy system - it does not have a state of being 'watched' or not, the issue is that it is unstable and at the top of it's energy state. It will be knocked back to it's lowest state depending on what vibration was absorbed by the interaction of the inteference pattern on it's energy signature.

Quantum Mechanics has to collapse sooner or later because the paradigm of space & time adopted in Quantum Mechanics is not correct. Mass/inertia is actually because of electromagnetic interaction of matter with aether whereas physicists have been making all sorts of manipulations since more than a century. Newton & Einstein had rejected aether before introducing their laws & theories. Whereas aether has been shown to be existing and containing the secrets of light & time. Once aether is accepted space is again finite & absolute and filled up with aether, the electric dipoles, and it is aether through which forces of nature are transmitted as against the irrational action at a distance through fields without knowing the physicality of the fields, time is emergent & relative depending upon motion of the observer, and as humans perceive it, time is emergent and matter is not absolute but emergent. (This alternative paradigm reveals that there is very powerful God who has power on matter & time and everything existing in the finite space and existence of God is the prerequisite for the creation & existence of universe ).In brief the scenario is as under Aristotle:- Space- absolute & finite; time- absolute, matter-absolute, light/radiation- not properly known Newton:- Space, time & matter same as Aristotle; light a wave-motion with corpuscular theory Einstein:- Space- interconnected with time & emergent, Time-emergen & interconnected with space & relative, matter & Energy (light/radiation) is absolute & transmutable and light/radiation as wave-motion with no clue as to what is light/radiation physically. Final state of existence:- Space-absolute & finite, time- emergent & relative depending on the motion of the observer/body with respect to aether at rest frame of reference, matter-emergent & finite, light/radiation- a electromagnetic disturbance of electric dipoles of aether creating a wave motion and all forces of nature being electromagnetic forces which is being transmitted through aether, the electric dipoles. As every circuit designer knows, impedances govern the flow of energy. This is not a theoretical musing. It is particularly relevant in quantum mechanics. If one seeks a continuous visualization of the process of state reduction, looking at the behavior of the associated quantum impedances permits to see how the energy flows. see for instance "Quantum Impedances, Entanglement, and State Reduction" http://vixra.org/abs/1303.0039 for a description, and "A Possible Resolution of the Black Hole Information Paradox" http://www.opticsinfobase.org/abstract.cfm?URI=QIM-2013-W6.01 for the application of these ideas to a long standing paradox
