California stem-cell grants awarded

First major round of research targeted at therapies takes off.

The starting gun has fired for 14 research teams, based in California, who now have four years to make good on the therapeutic promise of stem cells.

On 28 October, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) committed US$230 million to teams of basic and clinical researchers aiming to move experimental stem-cell treatments into an investigational new-drug filing with the US Food and Drug Administration.

  • I have chronic dystonia and dyskinesia caused by the neuroleptic medication risperidal (risperidone) and which is also exacerbated and worsened by the fact I'm on zyrexa. My psychiatrist has told me I either have to take a risperidone derivative or zyprexa for my psychotic condition. I've been having psychosis problems since several years ago, when I was first put on medication. I am looking forward to stem cell research and treatments somehow correcting my physical and mental problems, so I can stop taking the harmful and dangerous medications. They even cause people to die, and they are definitely worsending my physical and mental conditions, not making them better.
