Trapped under ice

Nature talks to the team behind a risky submarine mission to map the underside of an Antarctic glacier.

When the Autosub 3 robot submarine began its pioneering 110-kilometre round trip under the Antarctic ice, there was no guarantee that it would ever come back.

Its sister craft, Autosub 2, had been lost on a similar mission in 2005.
