Satellite to monitor carbon sinks sinks
Orbiting Carbon Observatory crashes into sea.
A mishap shortly after launch led to the loss of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO), a NASA environmental monitoring satellite, on 24 February. The satellite crashed into the ocean off Antarctica.

Commiserations for all the good work going down the drain. The comparison with the Japanese project bears similarities with the car industry, i.e. the reliable Japanese cars vs. the ailing American ones.
