Environmental chemists keep watchful eye on Beijing's smog

On the eve of the Olympic Games, scientists are taking the long view on the capital's air pollution.

From her platform on top of the seven-storey building near the east gate of Peking University, Staci Simonich has a good perspective on what’s around her. Not because of the view — which doesn't offer much on a hazy day — but because her particulate matter sampler is helping her to monitor Beijing's world-famous smog.
