Novartis Foundation to close its doors

Time runs out for acclaimed scientific symposia.

Having given nearly 60 years of intellectual succour and hospitality to biomedical scientists from around the world, London's Novartis Foundation will close at the end of February. Its historic building will probably be taken over by the Academy of Medical Sciences charity, which is unlikely to be able to afford to continue the foundation's tradition of intimate symposia.

  • A very simple solution: Why not ask Microsoft for help? It's time they contribute to promote Science and Technology. (no pun intended).

  • There is also another reason why scientists will miss the institution. In addition to the high quality series of symposia, a unique bursary scheme funded young researchers to attend these meetings and subsequently spend months in the department of one of the symposium participants. The bursary provided young scientists with an outstanding opportunity to meet and establish connections with the world’s leading investigators in the field, to learn new methods and to broaden scientific expertise. Being one of the bursary recipients, I am most grateful for the experience. It will be hard to substitute it.

  • This is sad to see. I attended one of these meetings and it was one of the most intense and most stimulating meetings ever.
