Genetic hotspot for autism found

Abnormality on chromosome 16 is associated with 1% of autism cases.

The risk of autism may be increased 100-fold by abnormalities in a region on chromosome 16, researchers have found.

The findings, published today by the New England Journal of Medicine1, are being used to develop a clinical test to help diagnose autism, and could eventually lead to a greater understanding of the puzzling disorder.
