Year of the what?

Nature News tracks who's celebrating their year in 2008.

What will 2008 bring? Cheesy chips, perhaps, seeing as 2008 is officially the United Nation’s International Year of the Potato, and, at least in Greece, the Year of Feta.

The UN has also declared 2008 to be the International Year of Sanitation, the International Year of Planet Earth (which lasts for 3 years) and the International Year of Languages.

  • Why is there a year of the frog? The answer is this: one-third to one-half of amphibian species will go extinct in our lifetime unless extraordinary measures are taken. The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums met in Budapest last summer and declared 2008 to be "the year of the frog" to raise awareness and the funds that truly can avert the disaster. So this isn't a pep rally for amphibians -- it's a last stand to keep about 3,000 species from disappearing.
