Chance breaks world records

Many track and field events have reached plateaux.

When Khalid Khannouchi won the London marathon last month in 2 h 5 min 38 s, he shaved 4 seconds off the world record. Now scientists are suggesting that chance, rather than stamina or skill, is behind this and other athletics records being broken.
