Plastic plants
Fields of oilseed rape producing biodegradable plastics could one day become a reality if research reported in the October issue of Nature Biotechnology ever bears commercial fruit. Kenneth J. Gruys and colleagues from the agrochemicals giant Monsanto, in St Louis, Missouri, have achieved the technically difficult feat of producing a genetically engineered plant that makes the organic polymer PHBV in its seeds.
