Turning down the earth's themostat
The circulation of water in the Earth's oceans is primarily responsible for the transport of heat around the world and is the most important controller of the world's climate. Just as water in the pipes of a central heating system carries heat from the boiler to the rooms of a house, so ocean currents carry heat from the Equator to the poles.
