Model may give two-year warning of El Niño
Long-term forecast possible for Pacific climate swings.
Researchers have created a climate model that can successfully predict, in hindsight, the past 24 El Niño events with a lead time of two years.
That's a big improvement on previous models, which can only forecast the Pacific climate disruptions six to nine months in advance, says Vernon Kousky, who works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Camp Springs, Maryland.
