Nuclear waste could bury itself

Geologists calculate melted granite would contain high-level waste.

Heat generated by the most dangerous nuclear waste could be exploited to bury it permanently and irretrievably in the Earth's crust, geologists are claiming1. But waste-management experts warn that sound science is not enough to bring about the safe disposal of high-level waste.
