Underground peat fires found in Mali
Shovel settles mystery of Timbuktu's reputed volcanoes.
Red-hot earth beneath the desert sands of Mali is caused by naturally burning peat deposits not volcanoes, a field expedition has found1.
Soil in the Timbuktu region sporadically seems to bake, fumes spew from glowing-hot holes in the ground and trees and scrub burn from the roots up.
