Microbes give statues facelifts

Soil bacteria could shield limestone sculptures from acid rain.

Common soil bacteria could soon be protecting stone monuments from the ravages of urban pollution.

Sulphur in acid rain is dissolving the surface of the limestone and marble carvings that adorn European cities.
