Rod forest cuts environmental noise

Poles could reduce road, aircraft or factory din as well as solid barriers.

Screens of poles modelled on a minimalist sculpture could cut road, aircraft or factory noise as well as unsightly solid sound barriers, say researchers in Spain.

Juan Sanchez-Perez of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and colleagues made the screens after finding that the regularly spaced metal pipes by Spanish artist Eusebio Sempere on display in a Madrid park, dampen sound waves within a particular frequency band.
