Magnetic islands boost memory
Imprinted patterns boost hard drive capacity 200 times.
The storage capacity of computer hard drives could skyrocket if a prototype device for magnetic data storage developed by IBM can be commercialized.
The new system, unveiled by Manfred Albrecht and colleagues at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, could offer many times the data storage capacity of current state-of-the-art systems, such as IBM's Microdrive.
