Sunlight scrubs water
A pick'n'mix has produced new water-cleaning catalysts.
German chemists are purifying contaminated water with new photocatalysts that use sunlight to burn up organic pollutants1.
Wilhelm Maier of the University of Saarlandes in Saarbrücken and colleagues have pinpointed several metal oxides that, when mixed with other metal compounds, absorb sunlight and use the energy to combine oxygen in air with carbon-based organic substances in water.
