Smelling trouble at sea

Sea-mines might be detectable before they are reached, using a new chemical sensor.

Sea-mines, a pervasive and perennial threat to shipping, might be sniffed from afar with a new system that detects minute quantities of explosives in sea water. If the sensor can be developed into a viable and portable device, it might make seafaring and naval manoeuvres far safer.
