Design for living
Robots can design and build each other, and co-operate like ants. John Whitfield doesn't know whether to applaud or worry.
Robots that mimic the way living creatures evolve and behave are closer than we think, two reports in this week's Nature suggest.
Laurent Keller, of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and colleagues, have taught robots some of the behavioural rules used by ants, and found that they can form cooperating, autonomous groups that are more successful than individual robots1.
