The blast of least resistance

A game of genetic cops and robbers lies behind the rice plantÕs ability to fight off disease, Jessa Netting reports.

Rice (Oryza sativa) feeds half the world's population but faces a powerful fungal foe. Beginning on a leaf or stem as just a small spot of greyish mould, the rice 'blast' fungus can bring an entire crop to its knees.
