Comet, what comet?
Three years ago, a comet flew by without anyone noticing. Its belated discovery shows how easily they can be missed, says Philip Ball.
Astronomy is one of the few areas of science in which amateurs can still make their mark. Countless telescope enthusiasts scanning the night sky provide useful information to professional astronomers, who lack the resources needed for comprehensive vigilance.
