A volume control for the sense of smell
Abstract
Neuroscientists have made impressive progress in describing the anatomical wiring plans in neocortical and hippocampal modules, as well as the physiology of specific local circuit connections. These brain regions, however, typically operate on polysensory information that has already passed through multiple intermediate brain regions, escalating the experimental challenge of ascertaining the functional 'goal' of different cortical wiring schemes.
