Unlike a decade ago, we now know that RCC is not a single disease. Biological and clinical properties define a number of RCC subtypes with different clinical outcomes and responses to therapy. For example, patients with a chromophobe tumor have a better prognosis than patients with papillary type II or clear cell type RCC. In addition to histological subtype, multicentricity or bilaterality, presence of necrosis or sarcomatoid features, and Fuhrman grade all affect prognosis in patients with RCC.
