Can corticosteroid therapy alter the course of nephritis in children with Henoch–Schönlein purpura?

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial by Ronkainen and colleagues, the researchers demonstrated that a 1 mg/kg/day dose of early prednisone therapy was effective in reducing the severity of abdominal and joint symptoms in patients with HSP. The authors also demonstrated that early prednisone therapy is effective in altering the course—i.e. reducing the severity—of renal involvement in these patients, although the incidence of nephritis was not influenced by steroid therapy.
