After receiving his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completing an internship at the Strong Memorial Hospital, New York, Dr Lipsky became a Clinical Associate at the NIH studying macrophage-lymphocyte interactions. From 1975 to 1999, he worked at the University of Texas Medical Center, initially as Instructor in Internal Medicine and later as Professor of Internal Medicine and Microbiology. Later appointments at the University of Texas Medical Center (1984-1999) included Director of the Harold C Simmons Arthritis Research Center, Co-Director of the Immunology Graduate Program at the Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Director of the Rheumatic Disease Division of the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr Lipsky was named the Harold C Simmons Professor in Arthritis Research in 1995, a position he held for 5 years. In 1999, he left the University of Texas Medical Center and returned to the NIH as Director of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institute of Arthritis and Muscoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
Dr Lipsky is internationally recognized for his research, particularly his work on T cell-macrophage interactions, the mechanisms of immune cell activation, the role of B cells in autoimmune diseases, and for his role in the development of novel therapeutics for rheumatoid arthritis. He has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 2001 Carol Nachman Prize and the 2002 American College of Rheumatology Distinguished Investigator Award. In 2002, the Arthritis Foundation awarded Dr Lipsky the prestigious Lee Howley prize for his contributions, which represent a significant advance in the understanding, treatment and prevention of arthritis and rheumatic diseases.
Dr Lipsky's major research interests are B-cell biology, both in normal and autoimmune disease settings, and the generation of the immunoglobulin repertoire. Dr Lipsky is the author of over 550 articles, is the past Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology (1992-1997), current Editor-in-Chief of Arthritis Research and Therapy, and serves on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals.
