In the western world, gastric cancer is a far less common disease than it once was; however, it remains a major global health-care problem. In 2002, over 900,000 patients were diagnosed with gastric cancer, and over 700,000 patients died of this disease.1 The fact that systemic therapy in addition to definitive regional treatment improves outcome for breast and colon cancer is well established, but whether this is also the case for patients with gastric cancers has not been determined.
