Thyroid incidentalomas on PET alongside other risk factors warrant further investigation

Incidental thyroid abnormalities are increasingly being found in patients undergoing PET scans for other indications, but there are no reliable criteria for the diagnosis of incidental thyroid malignancies, and controversy exists over which patients should undergo further investigation. Are et al. have shown that, although PET-detected incidental thyroid abnormalities are rare, there is a high likelihood of primary thyroid malignancy in patients with a positive PET scan and suspicious features.
