The aggressive nature of MCC, combined with high recurrence rates, frequent regional lymph-node metastases, and the well-known radiosensitivity of this disease indicate that a therapeutic regimen combining surgical excision and postoperative radiotherapy should be used to improve local control. The optimum treatment regimen for MMC remains unclear, however, as the low worldwide incidence of this disease means that only small, retrospective series have been published.
