Vessel-related variables improve prognostic ability of the Dukes staging system

According to joint research from Greece and the UK, the ability of the Dukes staging system to determine the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients could increase greatly with the inclusion of three vessel-related variables. Using the current system, adjuvant therapy is administered to those with lymph-node involvement (stage C), but not always—depending on the policy of cancer centers—to those without (stage B); up to 80% of the former receive therapy from which they will receive no benefit, while 20% of the latter could relapse and be denied vital treatment.
