The study by Lee et al. suggests that a 6-month course of dalteparin might improve, compared with vitamin K antagonists (VKA), the 12-month survival of cancer patients without metastasis at the time of their VTE event. The mortality rate at 1 year was reduced by 50% in the dalteparin group as compared with the VKA group (P = 0.02). For the whole cancer population, as for the subgroup of cancer patients with metastatic disease, the overall survival was comparable between the two treatment groups.
