Expectations of analgesia: cortical and spinal mechanisms affect pain response

Analgesic responses are altered by expectation, which a recent paper reports is mediated by at least two different mechanisms: cortical (as highlighted in previous studies), and spinal/supraspinal. The investigations were based on the phenomenon of diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC), or counterirritation, whereby pain in one part of the body inhibits pain responses in another.
