Recently, there has been a veritable explosion of papers on GFR-estimating equations. Many papers have been published evaluating the performance of the MDRD equation in particular subsets of patients (such as Chinese patients, patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, and kidney transplant recipients).1, 2 For the practicing nephrologist, the pertinent question is often, how well does the MDRD equation work in my patient? However, many of the papers cannot answer this seemingly straightforward question, because of two key issues.
