High prevalence of new-onset hyperglycemia in nondiabetic patients on peritoneal dialysis

Patients with no history of glucose intolerance can develop hyperglycemia after initiation of peritoneal dialysis (PD) because of the glucose contained within the PD solution. Analysis of data from a set of Chinese patients started on PD indicates that new-onset hyperglycemia is prevalent in previously nondiabetic patients. Even mild hyperglycemia (>100 mg/dl, >5.6 mmol/l) seems to be detrimental to the survival of people on PD.
