Broadly speaking, there are two reasons for choosing APD over continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. First, it enhances quality of life and second, it increases the flexibility and capacity of dialysis dosing in order to achieve sufficient solute clearance and ultrafiltration. It is increasingly evident that, given the choice, patients select the dialysis modality that enables them to optimize their lifestyle.1 By obviating the requirement for daytime exchanges, APD liberates valuable time that can then be spent with family and friends, at work, or on hobbies.2 Having made the choice to adopt APD, patients understandably wish to continue with this treatment modality as their residual renal function declines.
