Standardization of end-of-life decision-making in chronic dialysis patients

Nephrologists must often engage in end-of-life decision-making with patients, but wide variations in practice have been reported. In 2000, the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) released guidelines on shared decision-making regarding initiation and withdrawal of dialysis. According to a recent study, these guidelines have reduced variability in practice, and have improved end-of-life care for patients on chronic dialysis.
