Stephen B Hanauer, MD

Stephen B Hanauer earned his BSc from the University of Michigan in 1973, and his MD from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1977. In 1982, after completing his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago, he joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, rising to Associate Professor in 1988. He became Professor of Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology in 1993, and was awarded the Dr Joseph B Kirsner Chair at the Gastrointestinal Research Foundation at the University of Chicago in 1999. In 2000, Dr Hanauer became Director of the Section of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He is also Director of the Logan Center for Gastrointestinal Clinical Research and co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center.

The focus of Dr Hanauer's research has been on inflammatory bowel disease, with special emphasis on ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. He designed and maintains the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Registry, which is a clinical research database of over 5,000 patients.

Dr Hanauer is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology, as well as a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology. He actively participates in professional associations and foundations, and serves on committees of the American Gastroenterological Association (past Chair of the Immunology, Microbiology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Section) and the American College of Gastroenterology. He is outgoing Chairman of the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and was the inaugural Chair of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) Clinical Research Alliance, which is a network of medical centers that conduct clinical studies on inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Hanauer was a member of the FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee from 1987 to 2000, serving as its Chair from 1998 to 2000. In this capacity, he wrote Guidelines for the Clinical Evaluation of Drugs for Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He is currently Chair of the Clinical Practice Section and Council of the Governing Board of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr Hanauer is the recipient of the Fiterman Foundation Joseph B Kirsner Basic Research Award in Gastroenterology (2001) and the Janssen Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Gastroenterology (2004).

Dr Hanauer serves on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals, including Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and is the author of more than 170 articles and many book chapters and monographs. He has edited nine books, most recently Advanced Therapy of Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Theodore M Bayless, and co-authored Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a Guide for Patients and Their Families with Joseph B Kirsner.
