Low bone density as a result of constitutional thinness

Low bone density has been attributed to several factors, including low body weight and hormonal imbalance. This relationship has been reported in young women with anorexia nervosa (AN). An association between constitutional thinness (CT)—a condition characterized by low and stable BMI but no hormonal abnormality—and poor bone quality has yet to be established. Estour and colleagues evaluated bone characteristics in 25 constitutionally thin and 44 anorexic young French women with similarly low BMI (<16.5 kg/m2) and 28 age-matched controls.
