In a recent Journal of the American Medical Association article, Kurth and co-workers reported that, among the 27,840 female health professionals who participated in the Women's Health Study, those who reported active MA had a significantly increased risk for major CVD, including ischemic stroke, MI, angina, coronary revascularization, and death from ischemic CVD, when compared with nonmigraineurs. Women with MO were not at increased risk for CVD. A meta-analysis of prior studies has shown relative consistency in reports of an increased risk for stroke in female migraineurs, particularly those younger than 45 years.1 The data on CVD and migraine, as reviewed by Kurth et al., are less consistent. This large study, in which women were followed prospectively for a mean of 10 years, contributes important information to the discussion of a possible relationship between coronary disease and migraine.
