Partial thrombosis of the false lumen independently predicts mortality

The outcomes of patients with type B acute aortic dissections (those confined to the descending aorta) differ depending on the diameter of the aorta and the patency of the false lumen—patients with complete thrombosis of the false lumen have a better prognosis than do those with a patent false lumen. Tsai et al. examined data from the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection to determine whether partial thrombosis of the false lumen (defined as presence of both flow and thrombus) could predict mortality in patients with type B acute aortic dissection.
