The PROVE IT-TIMI 22 trial randomly assigned patients with ACS to treatment with either 80 mg atorvastatin daily or 40 mg pravastatin daily.1 The composite endpoint was reduced by 16% in the atorvastatin group over an average of 24 months' follow-up; however, this approach of intensive statin treatment has raised concerns about the safety of achieving markedly low LDL cholesterol levels.2
