Role of the leukocyte count in CHD risk assessment
This article has no abstract so we have provided the first paragraph of the full text.
Inflammation plays a central role in atherosclerosis and, therefore, inflammatory markers might be useful diagnostic and prognostic tools. One such marker is the leukocyte count, which has long been correlated with CHD. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain how leukocytosis influences the development of CHD, including damage to endothelial cells, vessel plugging, induction of hypercoagulability and promotion of infarct expansion. Madjid et al. have recently reviewed the literature on this topic, and have concluded that leukocytosis is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events, irrespective of atherosclerotic disease status.
