Warfarin therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation: risk of intracranial hemorrhage

Warfarin is widely used for the prevention of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, but higher intensities of anticoagulation increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhage. Since this complication is uncommon, however, there is little evidence concerning associated risk factors such as age. A recent study by Fang and colleagues has examined how the risk of intracranial hemorrhage is influenced by the patient's age and INR.
