Advances in infant heart transplantation

Transplantation of ABO-incompatible allografts is not generally feasible, except in some cases of kidney and liver transplantation in heavily immunosuppressed individuals. A new study by Fan et al., published in Nature Medicine, has demonstrated the development of B-cell tolerance to donor blood group A and B antigens in infants undergoing ABO-incompatible heart transplantation. This finding is the first illustration of intentional tolerance induction in human infants.
