The ABCs of trans(porter) inhibition

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are ubiquitous proteins that transport diverse molecules ranging from small ions to large polypeptides across biological membranes. The most famous ABC transporters include the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and several transporters involved in multidrug resistance, including P-glycoprotein (Pgp; also referred to as multidrug resistance protein 1 or MDR1) and multidrug resistance–associated proteins (MRPs).
