Nitrated cyclic GMP as a new cellular signal

Much of what we know today about cellular signal transduction and receptor-effector coupling is owed to research that emanated from the discovery of the prototypical 'second messengers' cAMP and cGMP. Almost all mammalian cells express guanylyl cyclases—proteins specialized in the conversion of GTP to cGMP.
