Patching the gaps in Hedgehog signalling

Abstract
The Hh pathway, elucidated initially through genetic analyses of Drosophila embryo segmentation, controls the development of most tissues and organs during development. In perhaps its best-known role, the Hh ligand functions as a morphogen in tissues such as the neural tube, with different concentrations of the ligand directing the adoption of different cell fates.
